Keep Calm and Drink Camomile Tea

If Mother Nature had a first aid kit it would be brimming with camomile tea. The herbal elixir is recognised for its medicinal properties with devotees sipping the aromatic brew to combat insomnia, anxiety and nausea. It’s packed with antioxidants that fight inflammation and protect against chronic disease including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. No wonder more than one million cups of camomile tea are consumed every day across the world!

What is Camomile?

Camomile is a daisy-like plant with small golden flowers that are dried and used to create a tea with a fruity flavour, similar to apple. Camomile tea has a long and rich history that can be traced back more than 3000 years to 1550 BC. where it was used by the ancient Egyptians to honour the Gods and embalm the dead. Greek physicians prescribed the tisane for fevers and the Romans used it to treat headaches and urinary tract infections.

The Health Benefits of Camomile Tea

Camomile tea is best known for its restive qualities and is commonly used to help induce sleep. But that cup you savour before bed can also benefit your overall heart health. Compounds within the tea have blood-thinning properties that lead to improved circulation, healthier blood vessels and protection against cardiovascular disease. It is also a beverage recommended for people with Type 2 diabetes. Research indicates that a cup of Camomile tea with every meal can lower blood glucose levels as well as prevent some of the complications that come with Type 2 diabetes including kidney damage and vision loss. Another good reason to add Madura Camomile Tea to your repertoire is its ability to boost your immune system. Studies have shown that the tea can support your body and help protect it from ailments such as the common cold.

Natural beauty enhancer

Camomile tea doesn’t just restore you from the inside; it can also improve your appearance. It has been used for centuries to lighten and soften skin and is recognized as a natural alternative to reducing the size of pores. The anxiolytic and antioxidant properties found in Camomile tea can help reduce scarring caused by acne and fade age spots. You can create a simple face scrub by adding the contents of a Camomile tea bag to sugar and olive oil. Gently massage the face with the mixture, removing dead and dry skin cells. A quick rinse with cold water and the skin will be left soothed and glowing. Banish dark circles and puffiness around the eyes by applying a warm Camomile tea bag or go the whole hog and add the tea to your bath to treat eczema, swelling and even chicken pox.

Camomile Tea Recipes

Give your favourite recipes a twist by adding camomile tea to the mix. Madura’s Camomile and Honey tea brings a unique flavour to homemade ginger ice-cream (see recipe here). It also works well infused in panna cotta, cream and even meringue. 2015 MasterChef Australia runner up Georgia Barnes used the herb in a Mystery Box Challenge to create a Blood Orange and Camomile Tart featuring camomile meringue, camomile crème and sugar poached camomile flowers. While it typically lends itself to desserts camomile tea can also be used in savoury dishes, for example a scallop crudo with camomile-celery oil created by Craig Richards, the executive chef at St Cecilia in Atlanta, US.
